The Picasso Museum was the chosen location for the official launch of the historic agreement between Malaga CF and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO. The four-year association has been established with the aim of promoting a culture of peace through sport, internet and social networks. “Imagining peace” is the slogan and from next season the Malaga players will wear the UNESCO name across their chests.
After an introduction in four languages: Spanish, French, English and Arabic, five local sportsmen and women shared their experiences of the value of sport as an element in the education of children and adults. Berni Rodríguez, the captain of Malaga’s Unicaja basketball team, spoke first, followed by the recently retired skier María José Rienda, Malaga goalkeeper, Wilfredo Caballero, and the coach of the women’s football team Atlético Malagueño, Isa Guerrero.
“Proud” newcomer
The surprise fifth speaker was striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had signed his contract with Malaga CF just a couple of hours previously. “Today is my first day in Malaga and I feel very proud”, he told his audience.
The event culminated with words from the Vice-President of Malaga CF, Abdullah Ghubn, and from Irina Bokova, UNESCO’s Director-General, and a flamenco performance by Manuel Lombo.
“This is an extremely important day for many reasons, because both UNESCO and Malaga CF promote peaceful coexistence, integration and the fight against racism and xenophobia, and work for the youngsters who are the hope for our future”, commented Irina Bokova after the celebration, flanked by the Malaga President Sheikh Al-Thani and the UNESCO Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Public Information, Eric Falt.
